Ontario offers commercial drainage companies more potential buyers within an hour's drive than anywhere else in Canada, and more competitors chasing them. The way through is narrow targeting. Toronto is Canada's largest city and a city of apartment towers, and every tower has shared drainage and a manager who answers for it when a stack backs up. Start with a property-manager program or a focused ICI prospecting list, not a GTA-wide ad budget.
Who buys recurring drainage work in Ontario
- Condominium and rental property managers across Toronto's tower neighbourhoods, Mississauga's city centre and growing high-rise nodes elsewhere in the GTA. Condominium rules in Ontario come from provincial legislation we haven't loaded for this page, so our material describes your service, not the owners' obligations.
- Food-service groups in Toronto, where the City's interceptor rules are unusually detailed.
- Facility managers in employment areas such as Mississauga's Airport Corporate Centre, Meadowvale and Gateway, and Ottawa's business parks, where loading docks, parking lots and process drains need scheduled care.
- Institutions: hospitals, universities, colleges and school boards, usually through tenders or vendor lists, which is where a capability statement earns its keep.
- Contractors on infill, transit and utility projects who need hydro-excavation near buried services.
Toronto's interceptor maintenance rules
Toronto's Sewers By-law requires food service establishments to maintain grease interceptors. As of October 2026, the City's maintenance page sets a four-week servicing interval for hydro-mechanical traps, a 25% grease-and-solids threshold for gravity interceptors, and at least seven years of records kept on site; it also allows a longer interval where records show low accumulation (City of Toronto).
The marketing lesson: Toronto operators need a dependable schedule and well-kept paperwork, and a service company that hands over a clean record after every visit is solving a real problem. Owners should confirm details with the City. Read maintenance-contract marketing for how to package it.
Seasons and climate
Southern Ontario has cold winters softened somewhat by the Great Lakes; the North is colder, with longer winters. Building drainage service runs all year in the GTA, while hydro-excavation scheduling follows the construction calendar and ground conditions. Time property-manager proposals for the months before condominium and rental budgets are drafted, which you can learn by asking each manager.
Regulators and bodies to know
Linked for reference only:
- TSSA, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, for fuels and other regulated technologies.
- WSIB for workplace insurance, which ICI buyers frequently request proof of.
- Skilled Trades Ontario for trade certification.
- Consumer Protection Ontario for consumer matters.
How we'd approach Ontario
- Pick two areas, not the GTA. For example, Toronto's midtown towers plus one Mississauga employment area.
- Build sector documents: a condo-manager pack, a Toronto food-service plan, and a capability statement with WSIB and insurance details as issued.
- Work the list for six months with letters, calls, LinkedIn and CASL-compliant email.
- Prepare for tenders with institutional buyers once the documents are in place.
A worked example for one employment area
An illustration with assumed numbers. A Peel-based company picks Mississauga's Meadowvale and Gateway employment areas. Its list holds 180 facilities. Over six months it reaches 40 facility managers, walks 14 sites, and signs six scheduled site-drainage agreements averaging $8,800 a year: $52,800 of recurring revenue within a short drive of the yard. The same documents then go to condo managers in the Mississauga city centre.
What we'd measure in year one
Facility managers reached, site walks, agreements by annual value, tender invitations from institutions, and the share of revenue from scheduled work compared with last year. In a crowded market, we'd also track cost per signed agreement, so you can see whether narrowing the target is paying off.
Tax and next steps
Ontario clients pay 13% HST on our fees. Plans are on the pricing page. For a target-area plan, call, text or email.
Frequently asked questions
Toronto or the rest of the GTA first?
Usually where your trucks already are. Toronto has the most apartment towers and restaurants; Mississauga has large employment areas and corporate centres. A company based in Peel should rarely start downtown.
Do Toronto's interceptor rules apply in other Ontario cities?
No. They come from Toronto's Sewers By-law and code of practice. Ottawa, Hamilton, Mississauga and other municipalities have their own rules, which we check on their official pages before citing.
Is Ontario too competitive for a smaller drainage company?
Not if you narrow the target. A list of 200 accounts in two employment areas, worked properly, can produce more contracts than a broad campaign across the whole GTA.
What tax applies to your fees in Ontario?
13% HST.
